Emberá-Wounaan Ethnic

The Emberá-Wounaan Ethnic Group previously known as Chocoes, is divided into two different indigenous groups: Emberá and Wounaan found in the Cemaco and Sambu regions in the province of Darién, as well as collective lands in the province of Panama. The Wounaan live in areas of Darién scattered on the coasts of the Chucunaque, Tuira, Balsas, Chico, Jaqué, Sambú and Río Bagre. The Emberás live on the shores of the Chagres, Mocambo Abajo, San Antonio, Gamboa and Emerá Gatún Rivers.

Law 22 from November 8th, 1983 rules part of the Emberá-Wounaan Region. Other aspects that stands out in the Emberá-Wounaan people are its location, language, group division and its relation to nature. Pride over their land and tradition is inestimable. For the Emberá-Wounaan, their land is beautiful and hospitable like a mother, they love, respect and protect it.

Their wardrobe, habits and customs are the same of past times. The Emberás talk the language of Emberá and the Wounaan the Nómara. Their colorful and flashy wardrobe is made up of wide skirts of stamped textiles and the women naked on top and the men with loincloth or “paruma” to hide their genitals. Both genders use body and facial paints. The Emberás-Wounaan women wear necklaces elaborated with silver coins, thick silver bracelets, and the Wounaan decorate their hair.
