The Bahamas is an archipelago with an extension of 970 kilometers south east of the US State of Florida up to Cuba´s east. They are made up by 700 low altitude islands, mainly over 2 500 keys. Out of the number of the keys there are only about 30 are inhabited. These islands were initially inhabited by Arawak or Lucayan Indians until Christopher Columbus discovered the islands on October of 1492. After the Spanish colonizers left the islands in the 16th century, the region was a pirate’s refuge. In 1648 the British turned into the definite owners of the archipelago until 1973 when the locals achieved their independence.
The population is mainly of African origin, the rest are Americans, British and Canadian who have maintained their cultural identity. The archipelago is divided into two groups of islands: those grouped around the Small Bahama and those that surround the Grand Bahama. San Salvador is of great historic interest for having been the first land that Christopher Columbus stepped on in October of 1492. It has few inhabitants and its coasts are ideal for diving.
The island of Exuma, has hundreds of small uninhabited keys for you to enjoy the sun in total intimacy and with shallow coral areas, here you can also enjoy excellent water sports. In Eleutheria you can find dream like inlets surrounded by hills and strong waves. The island of Biminis has excellent areas for diving and fishing.
The beaches in Cat Island are found all along its Atlantic coast, while the western coast is full of abundant fish. The island has excellent conditions for those that love adventures and eco tourism. The city of New Bight in the southern part was originally a settlement for free slaves in the early 19th century.
Long Island is the most picturesque place in the Bahamas. The waves of the Atlantic Ocean crash against the rocky coast. The bays with shallow waters are found in the western coast. Santa Maria Cape is found in the island’s north with a long white sand beach.
The main place on the island is called Stella Maris, it is an ideal place to dive and fish. In the center of the island the Salt Pond commercial area is found, where its main attraction is the arrival of large vessels. The Cartwright Caves are found in the south, formerly inhabited by the Lucayan Indians.
