The Dominican Republic, known as Quisqueya for Taíno Indians or Hispaniola to the Spanish colonizers, is located in the heart of the Caribbean.
It is a country which has the privilege in sharing the Atlantic Ocean to the north and Caribbean Sea to the south. Its coasts are in the north, south and east and borders with Haiti to the west. The Dominican Republic has kilometres of beaches; over 90 in 17 coastal provinces of the 32 in the whole country, including 5 small islands with exuberant vegetation and beautiful beaches.
The best place to begin your tour is the country’s capital, Santo Domingo. After the Spanish arrived headed by Christopher Columbus in 1492, Santo Domingo was founded as well as its first monastery, Street, university and the first cathedral.
Santo Domingo is certainly a Caribbean city. The Dominicans presume having the prized city of the new world, the colonial section, with buildings that date back to the 16th century and an atmosphere of the old colony, all are a monumental complex which has been recognize by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
The northern or Atlantic coast includes the following provinces: Monte Cristi, Puerto Plata, Espaillat, Maria Trinidad Sanchez and Samaná, all touching the Atlantic Ocean. Of these the most important tourism attraction is Puerto Plata and Samaná. Puerto Plata has architectural designs clearly different from the rest: the Spanish colonial and Victorian. The tourist zone includes 11 kilometres of beaches.
Costambar is the best which is protected by coral reefs; Long Beach, very urban; Playa Dorada also with corals and vast vegetation all have various tourism complexes and complete sports areas, including a famous professional golf camp.
Samaná has majestic landscapes and marvellous mountains bathed with beautiful beaches. La Bahia de Samaná is internationally known for its humped back whales. Is main center is Santa Barbara with a magnificent port and international airport. Its most famous is “Las Terrenas”, a beautiful spot with kilometers of beaches and virgin landscapes. Here you will find good hotel services and a variety of restaurants.
The east coast has the following provinces: Distrito Nacional, Sanb Pedro de Macorís, La Romana, La Altagracia, El Seibo, Punta Cana, Bávaro, and Hato Mayor. They all have over 30 beaches among them; includes a countless number of hotel complexes and all the necessary comfort for an enjoyable visit. Boca Chica, Juan Dolio and Bayahibe, all in the same location, have small squares, restaurants, night centers, casinos and beautiful beaches, especially the Boca Chica beach.
Juan Dolio is blessed with large extension of beaches and various tourism centers. The Metro Gulf and Country Club offers an 18 hole course with an International Gulf School. La Romana holds the “Ciudad de los Artistas”, Altos de Chavón, it also has excellent hotel complexes and three excellent gulf courses as well as beaches, water activities, shooting field and much more.
Bayahibe has exclusive and naturally beautiful rooms. Punta Cana and Bávaro are the main tourist attractions. The Costa Sur, is made up of the following provinces: Pedernales, Barahona, Azua and San Cristobal. Barahona has the country’s most beautiful coastal area and is the only location where beaches, mountains and rivers join together to make this area a perfect combination to live unforgettable moments.
