Guatemala is the Heart of the Mayan World and has the privilege of being the country farthest north in Central America. Borders to the north and west with Mexico; west of Belize, Honduras, El Salvador and the Caribbean Sea and north of the Pacific Ocean. It is divided in 22 departments, equivalent to states or provinces. One can visit Guatemala by air from any of the world’s main cities, in addition to having an extensive road network for those that want to travel on bus or rented vehicle.
The country is rich with culture and Mayan civilization and the splendour of nature. This country has many and interesting archaeological vestiges, with its great ceremonial centers and pyramids like Tikal located in the Department of Petén and Quiriguá in Izabal, both known as World Heritage Sites. Similar cities are Kaminal Juyú in the capital city and Abai Takalil in the southern coast, among others of great interest which attracts scientists and tourists from the entire world.
Its beaches, volcanoes and mountains, rivers and lakes, are an admirable landscape. Among its major attractions are Atitlán Lake, in the western Altiplano some 119 km from Guatemala City; in which you can find picturesque populations and three majestic volcanoes: Tolimán, Atitlán and San Pedro. The most accessible town of Panajachel has incredible handicrafts, nice cafés and restaurants. Other important cities in Altiplano are also Chichicastenango and Quetzaltenango. The colonial history of the country was developed in old Guatemala and declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. An extraordinary combination of palaces, convents and churches are currently conserved harmoniously combined with other architectures.
The strong earthquake in 1773 forced the city to be moved to the Valle de la Ermita, where the capital is currently found and the main economic, political and social centers are found in the country.
Guatemala City, known as the “city of the eternal spring”, is found in a 1 500 meter valley allowing the area to have a nice climate during the whole year. In this city you can appreciate monumental buildings and aqueducts constructed by pre-Hispanic civilization; the architecture was influenced by European neo-classic style which colossal buildings like the National Culture Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral among others. This city has grown and is currently divided in 21 zones which offer commercial complexes, condominiums convention centers, squares, restaurants and first rate hotels.
In the Caribbean Coast and the eastern part of Guatemala you can find Izabal and Rio Dulce. Six hour away from Guatemala City you can reach Izabal River the largest in the country. Local families and visitors love to visit the river for a swim or picnic in this mountainous region and visit the San Felipe Castle. The coastal town of Livingston also stands out in the region, located northeast from Izabal Lake; the small town of Esuipulas as well as the Rio Dulce National Park, River Park and tropical jungle.
In the Pacific Coast you can find Puerto San Jose and Iztapa. The Puerto San Jose is a peaceful coastal town with rustic hotels and luxurious homes on the shore. Iztapa some 11 km from San Jose has various small hotels and private beach homes which extends along the volcanic sand beaches.
